Sir Lionel's Elephant Stephen

The Flying Whale

Sir Lionel's Elephant Stephen

David illustrated The Word Witch, a book of poetry by the marvelous Margaret Mahy. One of the poems in this book is called ’17 Kings and 42 Elephants’. David loved the poem and he enjoyed drawing elephants and their mahoots so much that he found it difficult to stop! Here’s the first verse from this wonderful poem…

Seventeen kings and forty-two elephants
Going on a journey through a wild wet night,
Baggy ears like big umbrellaphants,
Little eyes a-gleaming in the jungle light
