Right from the start I’ve loved Jack’s writing, his surreal yet earthy imagination, his compassion, his insistence that we remember and understand his beloved Waharoa in the 1930’s, but most of all his humour.
There is something in the liquid, layered world he creates, the ability of his wonderful characters to slide through barriers of time and space that reminds me of the radio serials of my childhood. The challenge is always to try and match the cover image with the outrageousness of the lies inside.
