David’s inspiration for this picture has two sources. Firstly, he has always admired the art of Leonardo da vinci, one of the greatest painters of all time. Da vinci’s Allegory of Boat, Wolf, and Eagle is clearly evident in David’s drawing.

The second source of inspiration was a bear exhibition and fund-raiser held in Dunedin in 2000. New Zealand illustrators were asked to donate a bear artwork to raise money to support rescued bears. This drawing by David was one of 34 artworks which together raised over $14,000 for WSPA (now World Animal Protection).
