When David was a young man he lived in rural North Canterbury. He loved to draw the natural world around him and he was often drawn to the pine trees which populate the local landscape.
This particular pine tree was one of several which stood in a single row. What attracted David was the way in which each tree had responded to the elements; to the rain, the wind, sun and to the ravages of time. Each tree wore all these things externally, visible for all to see. And interestingly, each tree showed a different history.
Is this a photograph?
While this image may look like a photograph it is in fact a pencil drawing. David added a layer of clear gel over the drawing, then followed the pencil line with sepia watercolour, giving his artwork a 3D-like quality.
