Sometimes books present unexpected and really interesting puzzles to solve. In T.A. Barron’s wonderful Great Tree of Avalon Trilogy my original commission to create a tree logo and internal chapter ‘spot’ evolved into full covers of the tree in three seasons.

The greater challenge, however, was putting together the internal ‘medieval’ book part borders which had me spending hours unpicking the designs of illustrators like Howard Pyle and Henry Nelson to find out how to do them.
